Head of School Welcome

Principal

Guten Tag, bonjour, hello!

Thank you for visiting us. I thank you for your interest in our school and I invite you to learn more about our academic programs offered from preschool through twelfth grade.

International School – Three Languages – Two School Diplomas

AvH is a member of a network of over 140 German schools abroad. In 2012, we were awarded the official “Excellent School Abroad” seal of approval by the German government. We are recognized by the Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur du Québec. Therefore, we can offer two degrees: the internationally respected and globally recognized German International baccalauréat (Abitur), which allows a seamless transition to university studies, as well as the Quebec Secondary School Diploma, which leads to CEGEP. Our school’s academic success is clearly reflected in the fact that our graduates go on to the world’s leading universities.

Since its founding in 1980, AvH has been educating students of German, Canadian and international origin. Our graduates acquire a wide range of skills and competencies and they master three languages: German, French and English. All this prepares them especially well for the challenges of our global world.

Multilingual education makes children smarter and more empathetic

Multilingualism enhances cognitive development through improved linguistic skills. It contributes to a broader cultural experience, promotes tolerance and facilitates global mobility. In preschool and kindergarten, non-German speaking children learn the language at a critical formative stage and expand their vocabulary in a playful way.

In elementary and secondary school, German remains the main language of instruction but French and English are taught from Grade 1 through Grade 12. We follow the Quebec teaching curriculum for French mother tongue and English lessons. Whether students study French at the mother tongue or the foreign language level, they attend four lessons per week from grade 1 to grade 12. This provides them with an excellent foundation for university and professional life in Québec, in any other Canadian province, in Germany or globally.

Outstanding level in natural sciences

Another focus of the AvH academic program is on the natural sciences. Children are introduced to science as early as preschool. In primary school, they are ready to examine basic scientific phenomena and carry out their first experiments. In high school, the three natural sciences of biology, physics and chemistry are taught as separate subjects and offered until grade 12. Students thus acquire diversified and well-founded scientific knowledge, taught in state-of-the- art laboratories where they may also conduct their own experiments.

Mathematics is a core subject for all students up to grade 12. A demanding program with constantly increasing levels of difficulty lays the foundation for logical thinking and its application in the natural and social sciences.

Beautifully located in a green neighborhood - State-of-the art equipment

Skilled and motivated teachers, a welcoming campus, a pleasant and well-equipped building with modern labs, gym and classrooms – these are our ingredients for creating ideal learning conditions.

We are committed to preparing our students for their future lives with a well-rounded program.

I cordially invite you to browse this website or to pay us a visit to find out more about AvH. We are looking forward to welcoming you and your children to our school community.
